Copic Markers vs. Ink Blending

*This is my third blog post of the day, please see below for the Clearly Besotted release*

Hello there, I am delighted to be guesting over on the Simon Says Stamp Blog today to kick off Simon Says Stamp spotlighting Hero Arts for the month of May. Have you seen the new anniversary stamps from Hero Arts? They are hitting the Simon Says Stamp Store now and will be over in the Hero Arts store on the 22nd May.

For my cards today, I thought it would be fun to create the same card design but using different products. Both cards feature the new From the Vault Beach and Sea stamp set and as soon as I saw the dolphins, I knew I wanted to create a scene with them jumping up from the water at night with the moon behind.

My first card uses Copic Markers to create the scene. I first stamped the dolphins on to a panel of white cardstock with Intense Black Ink. I masked off below the dolphins for where the sea would be and started off by colouring in the sky. The colours that I used are listed below the supplies area but I added darker blues and purples to the outside edges and got lighter towards the moon. I then added in the sea, using more of a stripy motion for this to create ripples on the water. I made sure to leave some white areas for the reflection of the moon. I then coloured the dolphins and the moon. I added the panel to an A2 top folding white card base with foam tape and white heat embossed the sentiment on to black cardstock. This was added to the card with foam tape and I finished off by adding some stars in the sky with white gelly roll pens.

My ink blended card uses the same design but this time, I made a mask for the dolphins with masking paper after stamping. This was added to the image and then I made masks for the moon. I cut two Circle Infinity Dies from mask paper and then cut these down slightly to create semicircles. The top one for the moon was added on top of the dolphin image and the bottom one added upside down to create the reflection on the sea. I used Soft Pool, Mint Julep, Deep Ocean, Indigo and Black for the sky. Blending these on to the cardstock with Blender Brushes. I used Soft Granite and a little Soft Pool for the moon and Soft Pool, Mint Julep, Aquatic, Deep Ocean and Indigo for the sea. After removing the mask for the moon reflection, I blended on lighter colour and then added some interest to sea using the Woodgrain and Mermaid Waves stencils. Finally, I removed the dolphins mask and coloured them using Copic Markers. I finished off the card with the same sentiment and more stars in the sky.

  1. Both are lovely, I couldn't possibly choose! It's always interesting to see the same design and how it looks with different mediums and I think they both look wonderful. The reflection in the sea and the waves on the second one are just so beautiful and tranquil. A whole lot of masking went on for these cards! And I suspect a few ink refills were needed after lol. Thanks for sharing Michelle xx

  4. I love them both! It's hard to choose between them because they both have attributes that I love - the smooth blending of the distress inks and the striking colours of the Copic - the sea in particular has real depth. So nice to see you on the SSS blog :) xxx
