Birthday Butterflies

Hello there, today I have a card to share with you inspired by Julia Altermann. She recently shared how she uses Stabilo pens to colour images. She uses them both as markers and also as watercolours. I have had a little set of these markers for years that I use for general stationary/drawing use, so I thought I would give it a go water colouring with them. Julia mentions using the 68 size marker but I only have the 88 fine liners. They still worked pretty well though!

I first took a piece of TH Watercolor cardstock and cut this using the ME Femme Frames die. I stamped the butterfly images (masking off the smaller one) from the WPlus9 Flora & Fauna 2 stamp set on to it using Archival black ink. I then took the Stabilo pens and coloured lightly in the centres of the butterflies and pulled this colour out using a paintbrush and water.

The background/shadow was created using the black pen. I muted it using a lot of water on an acrylic block and picked this up with the brush and applied it lightly. I then added a little clear Wink Of Stella to their bodies. The sentiment, from the Clearly Besotted Sentimental Type stamp set, was stamped below in the same black ink. The panel was adhered to an A2 card base, which has a piece of Doodlebug paper on from the Fruit Stand collection, using fun foam.

Here are the links to what I have used on the card. Please click the picture to be taken to where I purchased it.

PLEASE NOTE: I have linked both of the 88 and 68 point Stabilo pens above. The first set, 88 point mini's, is the set I used.

I really like the vibrant colour of these pens. I do think the technique would work better with the thicker/more felt tip like point but it was great to utilise what I already had. Thanks so much for visiting me today, I hope you have a great day and a fabulous weekend!

  4. I love the super light shading you achieved, I was wondering about that, especially if one would pick up color only from an acrylic block and not go pen to paper. Now I feel challenged to create something like you did ;) And as for the 68 vs 88 pens: since the formula is the same, they should behave the same too. I just figured that if you actually want to color larger areas, the fineliners might get tedious ;) Cheers!
